Fan Fiction Basics

Last updated: 8/9/10

So this post is explain the in's and out's (in laymen's terms I hope) of what fan fiction is, what it accomplishes and where to read it.

I just happen to have some spare time, coffee and a love that rivals the heat of 1,000 suns for Twilight to write this up. That said, let's begin.

Fan Fic, Fan Fiction, FF: n. a story written using the same characters/places/plot lines/or any other previously copy written material. This material, also known as the cannon, may be changed to either expand or delve into alternate story lines.

Why would someone write fan fiction?
There are many reasons.
  1. One could be that in the cannon text, the author could have a gap in the timeline and a fan fiction may be written to explore what could have happened during that gap. For example: "What did Carlisle do when he was with the Volturi?"
  2. To write the pasts of characters in more detail than was is written in the cannon. Sometimes an author will hint at a previous event or experience that isn't necessary to the telling of the story but fans will want to expand on the story and develop it further. For example: "What happened in Texas when Maria turned Jasper? How did he eventually leave her?"
  3. To write the future of the characters. Often when a series of books end, you don't want to give up on the characters and the possible stories they could have. Fan fictions often pick up where the published book left off. For example: "Renesmee is grown up, how does her and Jacob's relationship grow?"
  4. What I see the most are the fan fictions that explore the "What if ___ happened..." and go from there. For example: "What if Edward never left Bella in New Moon? What would change? What would happen?" or for another example: "What if Edward and the Cullens weren't vampires, what if everyone was human but explained their story in a different way?" There are a lot of fan fictions that go into the "What if..." realm. It's a world that has endless possibilities.
So now you've got a feel for what a fan fiction is. There are a few things you should know before you start looking for stories.

Like everything else, people who write, read and distribute fan fiction love their acronyms. Here are a few key ones that you should know.

  • AU: Stands for Alternate Universe. An AU fan fic will most certainly contain vampires but might not necessairly take place in Forks or in this time. I've seen some that go into the far past or the near future, take place in Chicago or in another city (sometimes country).
  • AH: Stands for All Human. This fan fic gets rid of all the fantastical creatures. It won't contain any vampires or werewolves. This might seems weird. Why get rid of one of the main things that makes Twilight stand out? Well, it's easier to deal with characters that are all human when you put them in a relationship-since-I-could-walk, explore sexy times, or make them react to emotions how we would react. Sometimes you will see a fic described as AU/AH. This just means that they're all human and their world isn't what is written in the books.
  • OOC: Stands for Out Of Character. An example would be describing Edward as a foul mouth talking deviant who smokes and does drugs. Clearly that's not the Edward we know and love in the books but this Darkward (Dark Edward) can be fun and sexy written the right way.
  • Lemon: A fic that contains lemon(s) will describe penetrative sex. Smut, we call it.
  • Lime: A fic that contains lime(s) will have the sexy times of a lemon but with out penetration. Finger fun n'stuff.
  • Slash: A slash fic will have same sex pairings. Like Edward and Jasper, or Bella and Alice (with chicks it's sometimes called Fem slash).
  • UST: Stands for Unsatisfied Sexual Tension. A lot of the fan fics that are AH will have teenage Bella and Edward's hormones raging that make for good drama and some interesting UST.
  • Shipping or 'Ships: Refers to "Relationship-ing". A lot of fans prefer cannon shipping. Example: Edward x Bella, Alice x Jasper, Rosalie x Emmet. But there are some fics out there that will have a Jacob x Bella ship. What kind of shipper are you?
  • H/C: Stands for Hurt/Comfort. This usually means that one of the main characters is going through a bad time (they hurt) and the other character is trying to comfort them. These may contain lemons if the comfort is of a physical nature.
  • Fluff: The romantic stuff that makes you go "aww". It's usually what separates the lemons.
  • Angst: It's like all the emo stuff.... Remember how you felt when you read New Moon for the first time? Yea, that's angst. High School drama is full of it. Like everyone went to Angst High.
  • A/N: Stands for Author's Notes. Sometimes an author will set you up for the chapter or write what inspired the chapter. They can be found at the beginning of the chapter, at the end, or sometimes both.
  • RPF: Stands for "Real Person Fic". This incorporates a real live person into the story or makes the story about them. An example would be a fan fiction base upon Robert Pattinson meeting and falling in love on the set of Twilight.
  • R&R or R/R: Stands for Read & Review. Authors really appreciate feedback from their readers. Whether it's a "I really liked this" or "you've misspelled princiPAL". Even if the story has been completed for months, authors like to know what you think of their work.
  • Beta: A beta is someone who reads a chapter of a story for grammatical errors and flow. They're a proof reader for an author. You can find out more about what a Beta is and how to become one at the bottom of this post under "Get Involved".
Start reading!
There are a bunch of sites that host Twilight fan fiction. Listed are the most popular sites.
  1. FanFiction.net This is a hub for fan fiction of not just Twilight, but a lot of other fandoms too. If it's popular, chances are someone wrote a fan fiction about it. I think the biggest group on ff.net is the Harry Potter fan fiction with Twilight coming in second.
  2. Twilighted.net This is a web site solely dedicated to Twilight fan fiction. You need to create an account to log in and read the fics but all the fics have been validated by someone so you know that each and every story has been proof read by someone.
  3. ADifferentForest.com This site is for more than just reading fan fiction. It's a general fandom site that deals with news, art, events, etc. I think you need a log-in to participate in any of the discussions and/or read the stories posted to their library.
  4. TheWritersCoffeeShop.com This is a great fan fiction site. It's well run with a growing library, discussions, forums, contests, etc. You will need a log-in but it's quick and easy.
  5. AdultFanFiction.net This is for adults only (18+) so it will contain mature material.
I have posted a few fan fiction recommendations here. I keep this post updated so if I read something new and incredible I'll add it to the list or I'll update the status of the story. I have summaries and pros of each story as well as a little key in case you forgot all your acronyms.
You can always find a link to my fan fictions recommendations on the far right side ----->
of the window under "Fan Fictions 101" anytime you visit.

Get involved!
I highly recommend that you review as often as you can. I know sometimes you just want to know what happens next so hitting that "Next Chapter" button is so tempting.

Other ways of getting involved is becoming a Beta. Check out Project Team Beta for more details. There are also great sites that recognize great fan fiction writing, you can find more about them by visiting the Twilight Awards and Twific News which will link you to various fan fiction contests, awards and more recommendation sites.

Douche gave me caffeine

I specifically asked for decaf but the douche at Starbucks must have given me the supercharged stuff because it's 3:30 am and I'm still wide awake.

So what have I been up do?

Why I was making my very first fan video.
Disclaimer: I'm loopy from the caffeine and the late hour so if this sucks I blame the douche @ Starbucks and so should you.

Meet Up and talk Twilight

So today was my first (the group's second) Pasadena Twilight Lovers Book Club meeting, and it was great. If you're in the area and you love Twilight (why else would you be on my random blog?) then come join us.

I made three new friends who share my love of this series and they made a overly obsessed and addicted friend in me. :-)

I don't normally post twice in one day but I had to plug my new group.

It's a slow Twi-news day. I'll just leave you with this nice story.

I love me some Twilight related merchandise. There are some things out there (or coming out soon) that I really need want.

The two guarantees are New Moon: The Official Illustrated Movie Companion and Twilight: New Moon Soundtrack. I've already per-ordered the first and the second I also pre-ordered but Amazon said it wouldn't arrive until the 22nd. Screw that. I cancelled that order and will get it on iTunes on the 20th.

Then there's the stuff in my wish list. In no particular order:

Cardinal Industries Twilight New Moon Game
This is the New Moon board game. They have a Twilight one too but I heard it wasn't that good. If the first one wasn't good then I have mixed feelings about this second one. It's available for pre-order right now so I'll wait until people have actually played and review it to think about buying it.

Scene It? Twilight Deluxe Edition
I really want this! This sounds like lots of fun to play with a bunch of Twilight friends. All I need now are some Twilight friends to play with me. =D

Twi-inspired notepad
This just looks cute and useful. Win win. :-)

The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide
This has been available for pre-order since forever. I have no idea when it's coming out but when it does, I wants it.

The Kindle or the Kindle DX
To read my Twilight books anytime I want without having to carry them around all the time. Plus, you can read PDF files. That means I can put my shit load of fan fics on there and read them away from my computer. Awesome!

I don't own any Twilight related t-shirts yet. I just haven't seen any that isn't cheesy. Plus, I want something that will only shout out my obsession to fellow Twilighters but the rest of the population won't have a clue. I like things like that (ie my Bella charm bracelet).

I'd really like a t-shirt on/about my favorite fan fictions, but it's one of those thing you have to make yourself.

NOTE: There really isn't a reason I put that picture on this post. He's just good to look at.

Encounters with non-Twilight fans

Being a Twi-fan that's "out" (ie: I'm not ashamed to take my Twilight lunch box to work and buy Twilight related magazines even though I'm dogging curious stares like taxis in NY) I get a lot of crap and eye rolls. I roll with it though. They don't know what they're missing.

If I get curious overtures I'm not afraid or ashamed to totally pimp out the books to others. I've gotten a few co-workers hooked and just yesterday gave another the first book with the promise that I'll bring her the second on Tuesday.

It's mostly from my guy friends that most of the banter comes from. One asked me during lunch, eyeing my lunch box, who the Cullens were. Without too much detail I calmly explained that the 300 year old vampire Carlisle is the figurative head of his family who've all adopted his last name of Cullen.

When I wore my Bella charm bracelet the others didn't know what it signified but the fans at work squeed in delight at seeing it.

One time at Borders, I was checking out with a Twilight magazine and the guy behind the register asked,
"Twilight? Really?" (He's wearing an exasperated expression) "Is this for you??"
"Yep!" I smile happily. I'm thinking if I seem normal and nice, this guy will understand that even cool people get addicted to fun stuff like this.
"Ugh!" he exclaimed. (or maybe not?) "Why can't you say it's for your little sister or niece or something?!" "I hate Twilight. I just don't get it." He rants further.n"A guy came in and bought the books and I asked them who they were for and he said they were for himself. I told the dude, 'Dude, you can't tell people that. Say they're for your girlfriend or something,'" he said shaking his head.
Now I've got an incredulous expression plastered all over my face thinking 'What the hell's your problem. Ring me up you douche so I can tear into them already!'
What I say is, "Oh...well... I love them and I'm not ashamed to admit it.. it's like Star Wars... but for chicks." (God I wish I had witty comebacks.)

Now I get a little feeling of trepidation when I buy magazines... I just hope a girl checks me out but if it's a guy I try to think of something to say to him to shame before he shames me.

Whatever. This Halloween, since I work Saturdays, I'm dressing up as Bella (from the New Moon Italy scenes) to work. =D They'll all assume that I'm just wearing normal clothes but the fellow Twi-fans there will get it. That's what matters. I'll take pictures of myself... whether I post them up here or not is another thing. =P

Meet Hurricane Bells. A featured artist on the New Moon Original Soundtrack. He's indie, he's new, and he's someone you should listen to right now!

First, listen to some track off of his MySpace
second, Become A Fan on Facebook
then while you're listening to The Winters In New York on repeat
read the interview he gave to Entertainment Weekly then
finally hop on over to a Live Journal's Twilight community lion_lamb and post questions you want him (Steve, the guy behind Hurricane Bells) to answer. Read his interview that he gave them here. (They used some of the questions I asked! Woot!)

I've done this, and so should you. Trust me. He's pretty good.

On a completely non-Twilight related rant...

Why the hell is it always so friggin' cold in coffee shops?! I'm @ Coffee Bean right now sucking on my second tea and using their free Wi-Fi because, mysteriously, my house is the only house on the block to not have power. No lights. No internet! Gasp!

The hell with that, so I packed up my laptop and headed down here. I had to check the Twi blogs (my life revolves around Twilight...even in my non-Twilight related rants it finds a way in).

I'd go outside where it's a balmy 72 as opposed to this 63 degree refrigerator but there's a bunch of posers smoking inside. Thanks, but no. I've got about an hour before they close. I can hang in there. Must blog!

Up 'till now..

There's been a lot of Twi-crack out there, pretty much everyday, for me to drool/squee/swoon to. If you don't know what I'm talking about... well go troll the blogs and find out. There's just too much to link it all!

What I'm most excited about is (in no particular order):
1. My "Bella's charm bracelet" came in the mail today! And of course, I'm wearing it right now. It's cute. I try to keep the charms in full view to flash to other possible Twilighters that 'I am one of you. Talk to me.'

2. The track listings for the New Moon soundtrack was announced today. Excited that MUSE will do a rendition of I Belong To You just for the movie! I was reading the lyrics and some of them are in French! How cool. Then there's The Killers, Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear etc. on the soundtrack too. I can't wait for Oct 22. I pre-ordered it through Amazon but it wouldn't be delivered until the 22nd! As if! I cancelled that and I'll probably download the whole album from iTunes on that Tuesday.

3. The second MeetUp for the Pasadena Twilighters Meeting is next Sunday. I'm looking forward to meeting women obsessed passionate of the series as I am.

4. From the people who brought you The Sexy Stars Of Twilight, they're coming out with a second installment this Friday! mmm... Robert =D~

Oh and I stumbled on this nifty site where you can get info on the clothes worn in the movies and try to 'dress like ___'. I'm going to dress up like Bella for Halloween (New Moon Italy scenes). I've got a green shirt, skinny blue jeans, and I just ordered my KEDS. =D I could totally wear these clothes everyday so it's not really a "costume". Maybe I'll wear it to the midnight show? Possible.

Oh and another thing, it was all over the blogs this morning that they cancelled the London premier of New Moon and will only do a WORLD Premier in LA on Monday, Nov. 16th.

I love the universe and it looks like the universe loves me because I have that Monday off. I am totally going to drive to LA early in the morning... probably by myself, and watch the whole red carpet thing LIVE! I really want to find someone to fan girl with me... =/ Anyone? Anyone?

Right now I'm working on the timing to the subtitles of my Comic Con DVD. They're a bitch to do but I'm determined to have them. Also on the DVD will be the Entertainment Weekly interviews, the press conference panel, a slide show of pictures taken that day, and much more!

Don't worry Lili, I know I promised you a copy. I hope you're patient 'cuz this is taking a long time to do.

A new New Moon Movie Trailer

I went to the movies today to see 9 but when I caught wind that they were showing a new New Moon movie trailer in front of Sorority Row, I knew what I had to do.

I bought a ticket for 9 but snuck into Sorority Row. It was amazing. I tried to record it but towards the end you can hear the theater manager start yelling an announcement. When it finally came to her that no one could hear her over the f*kawesome trailer that was playing, she started to visit each and every person in the theater (about twelve of us) and personally relay her message. That's why the very ending is a bit wobbly and the end of the trailer is cut (there's more after they flash the movie title).

My reaction: I DIED. I thought I might have a heart attack, it was thumping so hard. I couldn't stop the "Holy Fucking Christ"s and replaying Edward taking off his shirt in my head. I was shaking and (I admit) tearing up a bit because I was freaking out. (I have text messages and a voice mail of me to attest to it).

After the trailer played and the manager walked away I waited for a bit and went into the theater showing the movie I actually purchased a ticket for. On my way I saw another theater that was showing Sorority Row in an hour. Coincidence? I don't think so, not in my Twi-verse. I set my phone timer for 50 minutes and in the middle of watching my movie it went off. I quietly left and snuck into the theater I'd passed.

Show time. Round two. This time there was no annoying managers to yell out stuff or try to catch me in the act. I tried recording this trailer. Looking back at it, it cuts off near the end. That's because my batteries died (recording in HD takes a lot of juice).

Anyway, consider my mind blown and my panties combusted.

Note: I'm making the vids private, e-mail me for the link (if I haven't e-mailed you already).

Another Note: I never went back to watch the movie I paid for. I had to go home, watch this over and over again, and upload the videos because this masterpiece needs to be shared.

I missed them!!!

The untagged HAWT Robward Cullinson pictures!!! ROBsessed and other Twiblogs were asked to take down their pictures of Robert that didn't have watermarks/tags on them. They were up for a short period of time and dammit if I didn't just miss the panty melting window of opportunity!

So pissed now.
